What to Expect on Test Day
Pre-Trip Inspection: What to Know
The Pre-trip Checklist will be provided by the tester before the test or rental. To pass the pre-trip inspection, you must:
- Identify each part by name
- Point to or touch the part being inspected
- Clearly explain what you’re inspecting
- Use language and detail consistent with the CDL Manual
- Do the Air Brake or Hydraulic Brake Check as part of your in-cab inspection—it needs to be the first thing you do for your test!

Vehicle Requirements
- Your vehicle must be the correct GVWR. Click here to find out if your vehicle does.
- The vehicles you test in MUST be empty. A flat bed must be swept off and a tanker must be empty and purged clean.
- If you test in a tanker vehicle, you must have a tanker endorsement. Any placards that indicate hazardous materials must be covered.
- To take a Passenger or School Bus CDL B test, you must have a Passenger endorsement or a School Bus endorsement. The vehicle that you test in must seat 16+ passengers including the driver.
- If you test with an Automatic truck, you will have an E (Manual) restriction on your license. You will only be able to drive Automatic trucks.
Manual Transmission Vehicle Policy
If you rent one of our manual shifting vehicles, you must demonstrate shifting proficiency and sign up for an evaluation before we schedule your test. During the test, if it’s clear that you cannot safely operate the transmission, the test will be stopped immediately due to a “dangerous act.” This results in:
- Automatic failure
- No refund
- No obligation to continue the test
- We reserve the right to protect our equipment and ensure safety.
